    • I did not know that. I like Franzen, even though the characters in “The Corrections” are pretty unlikeable…well, not unlikeable, but very flawed human beings. And likeable because of that…argh, he’s tricking my with his words! Seriously though, it’s a neat book and the writing is really really good. Now I’m not surprised that it showed up on so many reading lists at my department back then. Have you read it? If you are interested, I can give it to you when I’m done.

  1. I haven’t read it. I’ve read excepts only and of his new book as well. My take away was that yes, he is a very good writer, very talented with prose, but his subject matter and characters were depressing. But yeah, I’d love to read it. Right now I’m reading Penguin Island by Anatole France. It’s a satire about a nearly blind priest who accidentally baptizes an island full of penguins and the debate that ensued in heaven about what to do with them because penguins don’t have souls.
