My brother got me a game for my birthday. It’s called Agricola and the instructions were really complicated, so The Wife and I got some support from a couple of friends, had a nice dinner, and tried it out.
Turns out that the rules are not exactly difficult, but the rule book is written in a very awkward way. Basically, the goal of the game is to build your hovel & farm and maximize profits while making sure that your family doesn’t starve to death. Yep, it’s pretty uplifting premise. (In the extension, you also have to heat your hovels in addition to feeding your family.)
And there is a lot of micro-managing; for example, to plant, you have to
- plow a field action
- get grain action
- sow field action
That’s three fucking turns already!
And because there is just a limited number of rounds, not planning this correctly, or not investing into a major improvement like a stove or oven, can really become a problem later on. Additionally, you need to improve your land, etc., so that you get enough points to win the game in the end.
Anyway, it’s actually a fun game, so if you are looking for a new one, give this one a try.

Too big for a table top.
