It took about 4 weeks, but this morning I saw how a squirrel figured out how to climb up the window frame (!), walk over on the upper rim of the window frame (!!) and hang on the feeder and eat the bird feed!!!
Apparently, one of The Wife‘s friend’s husband has by now been in an escalating battle with squirrels for years and suggested looking at some squirrel-resistant feeders. They are horribly expensive, but the Droll Yankee “Flipper” Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder looks like a good next step:
Birds love to eat from it, but grey squirrels are prevented from eating from it in a way that will make you smile. The weight activated feeding perch is calibrated to react to a squirrel’s weight. When a squirrel steps on the perch, a connection is made with a motor that makes the perch spin, and the squirrel is flipped off the feeder. Thus, the name the “Flipper”!
Well, not really, because it’s quite beyond our budget, but it sure sounds spectacular.
